No contract address. No custody attestation. No audit trail. No information about who holds the underlying shares, which broker executes settlement, or what mechanism binds the token to the equity. The entire “RWA breakthrough” narrative rests on a price feed and a promise.
I have audited enough tokenization schemes to recognize the template. It never varies: a custodian holds the security, an issuer mints a token as a mapping, and a trading venue displays a quote. The blockchain is not the settlement layer. It is a ledger of receipts.
The Architecture Behind the Quote
The tokenized stock category sits inside the broader RWA (Real World Assets) push—the attempt to bridge traditional securities into crypto-native trading. The value proposition is straightforward: crypto users gain exposure to US equities without opening a brokerage account, while platforms acquire an asset class that merges traditional market volatility with cryptocurrency settlement infrastructure.
BIT is not alone here. Backed, Swarm, and Ondo Finance operate in the same lane. The mechanics are uniform. A regulated broker acquires shares. A custodian holds them. A smart contract mints an ERC-20 (or similar) token representing a claim on those shares. Trading runs 24/7, which is the genuine innovation—traditional equity markets close; crypto markets do not.
The architecture is a hybrid. On-chain token, off-chain custody. This is not a blockchain-native asset. It is a traditional security with a token wrapper. And that distinction carries consequences most buyers have not priced in.
Core Analysis: The Trust Boundary
The critical question for any tokenized asset is not the token contract. It is the trust boundary. For native crypto assets, the trust assumption is cryptographic—consensus and code secure the asset. For tokenized stocks, there are at least three human intermediaries:
