For context: MUSD is designed to be a dollar-pegged stablecoin collateralized by Bitcoin. The pitch is clear. Bitcoin sits in dormant wallets, generating no yield. A stablecoin backed by BTC can create a dollar-priced instrument that lets Bitcoin participate in lending, trading, and liquidity provisioning across decentralized finance. That is a genuinely attractive value proposition. But it comes with a price: complexity.
The first layer of complexity is the collateral itself. Native Bitcoin doesn't run smart contracts. It doesn't know how to enforce liquidations, release funds conditionally, or move between chains. For a Bitcoin-backed stablecoin to work, the BTC has to be bridged or custodied. That means multisigs, custody providers, bridge relayers, and price oracles. Each of those introduces a counterparty. And the security of MUSD is only as strong as the weakest counterparty in the chain.

DAI runs on Ethereum's audited liquidation engine and a decades-long track record of stress, including the March 2020 crash. MUSD's differentiator is not regulatory clarity—it's Bitcoin-native collateral. That matters because Bitcoin remains the most recognized, most deeply held asset in crypto. Yet its DeFi integrations have historically been clunky, bolted on, or trust-laden. A Bitcoin-backed stablecoin, if executed cleanly, could become the standardized way for Bitcoin to earn a yield without selling. That's the real prize.
But here is the contrarian reading that most coverage misses. The problem with MUSD is not that it's small. It's that its expansion narrative mirrors a familiar trick: labeling fragmentation as a problem and cross-chain expansion as the solution. I have seen this playbook from VC-backed projects for years. Liquidity fragmentation isn't some fatal disease. It's just the natural distribution of users across networks. Adding a stablecoin to more chains doesn't unify liquidity—it fragments it further. Each integration creates another pool, another wrapper, another set of incentives to keep prices aligned. MUSD could end up with $50 million of volume per chain and no chain where it has true depth.
The counterargument, to be fair, is that cross-chain stablecoins historically capture network effects. If MUSD becomes the default Bitcoin-backed dollar token on Wormhole-connected protocols, the cumulative volume starts compounding. Lending markets can integrate it. DEXs can pair it. What would change my mind? A published BTC reserve address would be a start. A real-time proof-of-reserves page, updated hourly, would be stronger. A documented custody structure—who holds the keys, how many signatures are required, what happens during multisig reconfiguration—would establish an operational baseline. An audited liquidation mechanism, stress-tested against historical Bitcoin crashes, would transform MUSD from a token into a financial infrastructure. None of those are unreasonable demands. In traditional finance, these are the minimum due diligence items for any money-market fund.
Liquidity doesn't care about your press release. It cares about the exit path. In a crisis, counterparties do not read Medium articles. They check whether they can redeem at par within a reasonable amount of time. A stablecoin without a visible reserve cannot credibly promise that. It forces users to trust the door rather than the vault. I have watched this pattern repeat across market cycles: beautiful dashboard, enormous cumulative volume, then a quiet announcement about “strategic restructuring” during a drawdown. The bull market hides missing attestation. The bear market exposes it in hours.

And that gap, in the end, is the only thing worth shorting.
